Landler

When I travelled to Rumania I spent some time in Apoldu de Sus, a former Landler village. Whilst there, I met some of the few remaining Landler who told me about their history. The Landler are a German speaking minority of Rumania. These former Austrian protestants had to leave Austria in the 18th Century because they refused to become Catholics, Maria Theresia exiled them to live in Transylvania. They preserved their original language for about 250 years and made their living mainly from farming. Most of the younger Landlers have already left from Rumania and it is now just a question of time until they have all gone.
